Continuous external testing and periodic penetration testing

Compare testing approaches by their agreed coverage, permitted activity, evidence and follow-up. Frequency is one part of the decision; it does not describe everything a test will examine.

Discuss your assessment scope

Start with the decision

Write down what you need to learn about your external exposure or a particular application. Identify the assets, access, business questions and restrictions before comparing suppliers or testing schedules.

Ask about coverage and cadence

For an ongoing external-testing arrangement, ask how asset coverage is agreed, when tests run and how changes or new observations are handled. For a periodic penetration test, ask how the engagement boundary, test window, techniques and follow-up are agreed. Do not assume the two scopes are equivalent.

Compare useful evidence

Ask each provider how it distinguishes an observation from a validated finding, explains impact and records limitations. Discuss how findings reach the team responsible for remediation and how retesting will be arranged.

Choose the next conversation

Use the BrutClad product page to explore its existing external-testing capability. Use the offensive security page to discuss an engagement around a defined testing scope. This guide does not claim that either approach replaces every other form of assurance.

A comparison checklist for continuous and periodic testing

When a proposal uses the term “continuous penetration testing”, ask what actually runs continuously and what requires a separate engagement. Compare the agreed work, not just the label.

Use the same questions for each option: which assets and environments are covered; what access is provided; which activities are permitted; when testing occurs; how observations are validated; how findings are handed over; and what triggers retesting.

For cost comparisons, ask whether asset changes, additional applications, manual investigation and retesting are included. Do not assume a recurring fee covers every type of assessment. Testing methods and access should follow the agreed project scope.

  • Coverage: identify assets, environments and exclusions.
  • Cadence: record scheduled activity and any event-driven follow-up.
  • Evidence: ask how observations and validated findings are distinguished.
  • Follow-up: agree ownership, escalation and retesting.
